European Film Awards: Michael Caine, Charlotte Rampling and ‘Youth’ win big
Michael Caine accepts an award Saturday at the European Film Awards in Berlin.
Paolo Sorrentino’s “Youth” and the movie’s star, Michael Caine, were among the big winners at the 28th annual European Film Awards, presented Saturday in Berlin.
“Youth,” a kind of high-gloss aging-buddy movie featuring Caine and Harvey Keitel as friends on vacation in the Swiss Alps, won the prize for European film. Caine was named European actor. Sorrentino won the European director award.
Charlotte Rampling was named European actress for her role in “45 Years,” director Andrew Haigh’s drama about a couple preparing to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary when they receive unexpected news. Rampling also received a lifetime achievement award.
Other winners included Christoph Waltz, who took home a trophy for European achievement in world cinema, and director Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary, “Amy,” which was named European documentary.
The European Film Awards are presented by the approximately 3,000 members of the European Film Academy.
