Coachella 2013: Goldenvoice says Blur-Stone Roses switch was planned

The two Friday night headliners at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will switch positions for the second weekend of the festival.

The reunited British rock bands Blur and Stone Roses were billed as dual Friday headliners on the festival’s posters, with Stone Roses closing out the festival’s opening night last week. For the second weekend, however, the Stone Roses will play Friday at 9:55 p.m., followed by Blur at 11:35.

Paul Tollett, president of Coachella promoter Goldenvoice, said the switch was planned from the beginning.

“Those bands pack a one-two punch, and I think fans are there to see both of them,” he said Thursday. “If you looked at our posters for each week, typographically we’ve always had them switched around for the second week.”

Some Coachella fans and news outlets had speculated that the move was prompted by differing reviews and audiences for the bands’ respective sets. Blur’s performance was generally well received and well attended, while the Stone Roses’ set earned more mixed reactions and a noticeably smaller audience.

Tollett, however, said the swap wasn’t any kind of judgment on their sets’ quality or crowd size. “I would never do that to bands,” he said.
