SUNDAY

Enduring as the Alps, comforting as hot cocoa, and more sing-along-able than any Broadway musical before or since, it’s the 1965 big-screen adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.” Julie Andrews stars. (ABC, 7 p.m.)

MONDAY

‘Tis the day before Christmas, and all through the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Downtown Los Angeles, local dance ensembles and musical groups will assemble for the “53rd Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration.” (KCET, 3 and 8 p.m.)

George Bailey (James Stewart) gets a bailout in Frank Capra’s 1946 fable “It’s a Wonderful Life.” And Ralphie (Peter Billingsley, above) lobbies Santa in the annual 24-hour marathon of 1983’s “A Christmas Story.” (NBC, 8 p.m.; TBS, 8 p.m.)

TUESDAY

Hoops fans who’ve been good this past year will find their stockings stuffed with “NBA Basketball” with a slate of games including the Lakers versus the New York Knicks and the Clippers versus the Denver Nuggets. (ABC, noon; ESPN, FS Prime, 7:30 p.m.)

Theodor Geisel wrote it, Chuck Jones animated it, and Boris Karloff narrated it. But the unsung hero of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is Thurl Ravenscroft, the basso profundo who delivered the holiday classic’s signature tune. (ABC, 8 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY

Tales of Dustin Hoffman will be told, anecdotes about David Letterman shared, and Led Zeppelin’s praises sung when, respectively, the two-time Oscar winner, the late-night talk-show host and the surviving members of the legendary rock band are among those feted at “The 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors.” (CBS, 9 p.m.)

THURSDAY

They would’ve liked Ike, loved Lucy and left it to Beaver … if they hadn’t been born a smidge too late. The special “Wives With Beehives” profiles present-day women who do up their homes, and their hair, like it’s the 1950s all over again. (TLC, 10 p.m.)

FRIDAY

Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion … and the dancers and choreographers of the Joffrey Ballet have been leaping and twirling and raising the bar for modern dance for over five decades, as revealed on a new “American Masters.” (KOCE, 9 p.m.)

SATURDAY

In his dramas and documentaries, filmmaker Werner Herzog often takes viewers to some very deep, dark places. But this time, it’s speleological. The Teutonic auteur visits the “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” in this 2010 doc. (History, 10 p.m.)
