Emmys 2012: Ratings split for ABC telecast with Jimmy Kimmel
ABC got good news and bad news for its Sunday Emmys telecast as the ratings rolled in Monday morning.
The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, delivered an average of 13.2 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. That was up 6% compared with last year’s show on Fox that was emceed by Jane Lynch.
However, much of that increase seemed to be coming from adults older than 50. In the key ad-buying category of adults ages 18 to 49, the show dipped to a 3.8 rating, down 10% compared with last year.
Part of the problem is that ABC generally skews older than does Fox, which has long aimed its programming squarely at young adults. ABC’s prime-time lineup, by contrast, is filled with shows popular among older viewers, such as “Dancing With the Stars,” the new season of which was aggressively promoted during the Emmys.
Also it didn’t help Emmy that it went head-to-head with a highly rated NFL game between the Patriots and the Ravens. But that was no different than last year, when the awards show had to contend with a much-watched football game that featured the return of disgraced quarterback Michael Vick.
