Stephen Colbert has his own ’60 Minutes’ ‘error’ with Sam Waterston

Stephen Colbert addressed the erroneous “60 Minutes” report regarding the Benghazi attacks and the subsequent apology on “The Colbert Report” on Monday night, but when Colbert attempted to discover just who was behind that apology, he got sucked into his own web of misreporting. This being a comedy show, the misreporting was all fake, of course.

Colbert claimed there could be only one person behind the “60 Minutes” apology, and that was former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Clinton, who was serving in that post during the time of the 2012 attacks, has long been a target for conservative commentators and Republican members of Congress.

“She’s so hungry for power in 2016 that she somehow convinced ’60 Minutes’ to air this false Benghazi apology to discredit their investigation,” Colbert claimed.

And to back up that claim, Colbert produced an “eyewitness” of his own, a CBS News intern with a suspiciously fake-looking gray beard and mustache, who identified himself as “Pancho Denews.”

“It was Hillary Clinton,” he said “She was swinging a bike chain and yelling, “We’re here to kill the story! Who wants to eat some chain?”

Of course, it wasn’t an intern at all, and though it sure looked like actor Sam Waterston, he was there in the guise of Charlie Skinner, his role as ACN news division president on the HBO drama series “The Newsroom.”

“I did it to prove a point!” Waterston as Skinner informed him in a monologue straight out of “The Newsroom. “As journalists, we’re the gatekeepers of truth. We separate right from wrong, fact from fiction, delicates from permanent-press!”

In response, Colbert ended that segment of the show with his own “60 Minutes”-style apology. Even the great Colbert is not above making a mistake. And even the great Colbert can admit to that mistake.
