Fall TV: New TV Shows
'Better With You' (ABC)
Premieres Sept. 22Two sisters (Jennifer Finnigan, Joanna Garcia) have very different relationships with their significant others.
We're not entirely sold. We'd like to know more about the sisters' relationship and why they are how they are.
'Blue Bloods' (CBS)
Premieres Sept. 24The police force through the unique perspective of a multi-generational family of dedicated NYPD officers.
We'll definitely be tuning in. While the brutality makes us squeamish, we're interested to see if it can maintain a balance between a character-driven show and a typical procedural.
'Body of Proof' (ABC)
Premieres Fall 2010A top neurosurgeon becomes a forensic medical examiner after an accident hampers her surgical skills and she kills a patient.
We loved her on "Desperate Housewives," but Dana Delany's "Body of Proof" character bears little resemblance to Katherine Mayfair.
'Chase' (NBC)
Premieres Sept. 20A team of U.S. marshals hunts down America's most dangerous fugitives.
There's a lot of well-wrought action, but what concerns us, as evidenced by a couple of clunky lines, is what comes in between the action scenes.
'The Defenders' (CBS)
Premieres Sept. 22Criminal defense lawyers, navigate the often blurry line between right and wrong with an impressive repertoire of witty insults and slapstick moments.
If Jerry O'Connell and Jim Belushi don't exactly scream "serious courtroom drama" to you, don't worry. Set in Vegas, this has exactly as much comedy as you'd expect from these two.
'Detroit 1-8-7' (ABC)
Premieres Sept. 21Detroit has the highest murder rate in the country, so it makes sense as the setting for a show about homicide detectives.
We don't understand ABC's choice to pair it with "Dancing With The Stars." After watching C-list celebs get their groove back, we're not in the mood for murder drama. Well, not usually.
'The Event' (NBC)
Premieres Sept. 20A guy's (Jason Ritter) fiancee disappears and the new president (Blair Underwood) learns of a secret CIA program. Yes, they are connected.
It's a great-looking and expertly constructed trailer, and a (very) informal survey of some who've seen the full pilot drew raves across the board.
'Hawaii Five-0' (CBS)
Premieres Sept. 20An elite task force whose mission is to eliminate crime on the beaches of the Aloha State.
The stunts are fantastic, the setting is beautiful, and there are a bunch of hot girls kicking butt in bikinis.
'Hellcats' (The CW)
Premieres Sept. 8A pre-law student loses her scholarship and has to rely on her dormant gymnastics ability to earn a spot on the cheerleading squad to stay in school.
The sexy, hip hop dance-driven cheerleading performances made us want to get out of our seats. The only other show that does that is "Glee."
'Lone Star' (FOX)
Premieres Sept. 20A con man lives a triple life in Texas while running two long games and secretly wanting to make both his fake lives real.
James Wolk should be the breakout star of the season but if the show is going to succeed it needs to build a foundation based on more than his secrets.
'Mike & Molly' (CBS)
Premieres Sept. 20A fourth-grade teacher and a Chicago cop meet and fall in love at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.
The love story is sweet, hopeful, and refreshing but is America too sensitive for a show that's chock-full of fat jokes? We sure hope not.
'My Generation' (ABC)
Premieres Sept. 23A documentary crew followed high school students as they prepared for graduation in 2000. Ten years later, the filmmakers revisit the former classmates.
It's a premise that will certainly resonate with the target demographic. We just hope it lives up to the hype.
'Nikita' (The CW)
Premieres Sept. 9A highly trained spy and assassin seeks retribution against the government agency that created her.
If the entire series can live up to the production values of the pilot, this show may set a new standard at The CW. It will certainly stand out.
'No Ordinary Family' (ABC)
Premieres Sept. 28A family's plane crashes into phosphorescent water and gives everyone random superpowers.
The cast seems great and the special effects are fantastic -- especially when Michael Chiklis' character learns that he can't fly, but he can sure can jump.
'Outlaw' (NBC)
Premieres Sept. 24a Supreme Court justice leaves the bench to go back to practicing law and trying to change the system from below rather than above.
Smits has undeniable charisma, and to whatever extent "Outlaw" succeeds, it will probably be on his shoulders.
'Outsourced' (NBC)
Premieres Sept. 23The call center for an American novelty company based in the Midwest is relocated to India.
It reminds us of The CW's failed "Aliens in America" with its often-imbalanced mix of mockery and respect for a new and unfamiliar culture.
'Raising Hope' (FOX)
Premieres Sept. 21A completely unprepared young man is left with a baby girl and decides to raise her despite his equally screwed up support system of a family.
Far funnier than we thought it would be with several laugh out-loud moments. As always, Garret Dillahunt and Martha Plimpton are superb.
'Running Wilde' (FOX)
Premieres Sept. 21A spoiled rich boy tries to buy the love of his childhood sweetheart, an idealistic do-gooder.
Will Arnett and Keri Russell seem to have pretty decent chemistry, so we're hopeful.
'$#*! My Dad Says' (CBS)
Premieres Sept. 23Based on the popular Twitter account, an adult son moves in with his forthright father who is not afraid to express his politically incorrect opinions.
Part of what's funny about the source material is the lack of context. When a joke is clearly set-up and we're waiting on the punch line, it sometimes lacks ... well, punch.
'Undercovers' (NBC)
Premieres Sept. 22A retired husband-and-wife spy team who now run a catering business are suddenly thrust back into their former CIA agent lives.
Both leads are exceptionally easy on the eyes and co-creator J.J. Abrams knows how to stage action as well as anyone. We're inclined to think the show can deliver the promised fun action with a dash of romance.
'The Whole Truth' (ABC)
Premieres Sept. 22A legal drama that chronicles how a case is built from the perspectives of both the defense and the prosecution.
It's hard to judge the preview when half of the cast is changing, but we'll tune in for the first few episodes, if only to give them points for originality.
'Love Bites' (NBC)
Premieres Spring 2011A romantic anthology series with only three series regulars but scads of guest stars like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jason Lewis and Charlyne Yi.
If guest stars are willing to regularly poke fun at themselves this may quickly become a hot-ticket show for celebs to drop in on, much like "Glee" and "30 Rock."
