The event: W editor in chief Stefano Tonchi, editor at large Lynn Hirschberg and hotelier André Balazs hosted a massively star-studded shindig Thursday at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, in celebration of the Golden Globes Awards, which are set for Sunday, and the magazine’s “Best Performances” issue.

The scene: Celebrants swarmed into a penthouse suite thick with Golden Globe contenders, presenters and other A-listers straight from W’s past, present and future movie-themed pages. Launching the party-packed Globes weekend in style, the clusters of smartly dressed guests chatted as they spilled onto the terrace overlooking Sunset Boulevard and sipped Dom Perignon. (The champagne purveyor and Cadillac were party sponsors.)

The crowd: Dropping in were awards nominees Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams, Julie Delpy, Idris Elba, Bruce Dern, Sally Hawkins, Lupita Nyong’o, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Robin Wright and daughter Dylan Penn, Jacqueline Bisset, Sofia Vergara, Corey Stoll, Steve Coogan and directors Steve McQueen and David O. Russell. Also there were Olivia Wilde, Michelle Dockery, Naomie Harris, Marisa Tomei, Kelly Lynch, Molly Sims, Sarah Hyland, Dita Von Teese, Amber Valletta, Liberty Ross, Allison Williams, filmmakers Sofia Coppola and Liz Goldwyn, Giorgio Armani’s Wanda McDaniel and Rod Manley, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, stylist George Kotsiopoulos, Decades vintage boutique owner Cameron Silver and more film, TV and fashion talents.

Quote of note: Beyond the hallway lined with artist/photographer Juergen Teller’s portraits of featured actors, Tonchi glanced at a table blanketed with copies of February’s W magazine, fanned out to show the six different cover images: Blanchett, Nyong’O, Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah Winfrey and Matthew McConaughey. He expressed good wishes for nominees in the coming awards season.

“Great people deserve great things,” he said.
