New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Bibhu Mohapatra review

Share

NEW YORK -- Up-and-coming Indian American designer Bibhu Mohapatra is following in the footsteps of Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass with his ladylike design sensibility, which was on full display in his spring collection shown Wednesday during New York Fashion Week.

The look: Pretty but sophisticated.

The focus: Color and movement.

Key pieces: Sleeveless, micro-pleated, pink and floral silk twill shirt dress. Black ponte trousers with inverted pink side pleats, worn with a sleeveless pink floral blouse. Pretty version of the sleeveless peplum blouse (which has been ubiquitous on the runways this week) in pleated white cotton poplin, worn with a black embroidered pencil skirt. Fuchsia, one-shoulder, embroidered stretch faille cocktail dress with draped skirt. Black-and-white “fracture jacquard” gown.

The verdict: He is really hitting his stride. It was good to see Mohapatra, who is primarily an evening wear designer, branch out more into daywear.
