Rihanna wore a white, midriff-baring Stella McCartney gown to Monday night’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala -- aka the Met Ball. Afterward, she slipped into something a little more daring to host an afterparty: a shiny gown, high-necked in the front, but with a back that draped so low that onlookers got a good view of what is technically called “plumbers’ butt.” Sorry, I’m only showing a photo of the more staid McCartney outfit. Although some attendees at the Met Ball spent hours primping, rapper A$AP Rocky told the Cut that all he needed was “marijuana and good taste.” And he polished up his grill for the occasion. [The Cut]

The gala, which celebrated the opening of the Costume Institute’s “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” exhibition, had a white-tie dress code, in keeping with the “first American couturier’s” position as the mid-century designer to the wealthy upper crust. And so the Met Ball red carpet turned fashion on its head, Los Angeles Times Fashion Critic Booth Moore writes, as mavericks such as Rihanna and reality upstarts such as Kim Kardashian came dressed fashionably and reasonably well. Late Tuesday, the Weinstein Co. announced it is licensing the Charles James name (see above), with an option to buy, from the designer’s estate and plans to reintroduce the brand to high-end retailers.
