Santa Monica celebrates Brit Week with weekend festival
Downtown Santa Monica, Santa Monica Place and Brit Week are hosting a two-day festival celebrating all things British this weekend.
The event will span three blocks along the Promenade from Wilshire to Broadway and include the main stage at Santa Monica Place. Organizers promise a variety of environmentally-friendly vendors, gardens designed by landscape architects, live entertainment, speakers and demonstrations.
Among the highlights:
--British designer Duncan Quinn is slated to park his double-decker mobile tailoring truck and showcase bespoke and tailored men’s clothing.
--Bohemian Rags is to introduce its spring collection, including garments made from recycled fabrics.
--Jewelry designers Conscious Life Jewelry, Jungle Bee Jewelry and Belandaria are to show their collections.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Events
Fashion made of recycled materials will be on view and for sale during a fashion show from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in the East/West Hall Courtyard at Pitzer College in Claremont. The collection was designed by Pitzer staff member Kathleen Kile with assistance from her colleague, photographer Nicole Rocha,using recycled pet food bags, grocery bags, tarps and more. The event is free and open to the public.
Violinist and composer Ysanne (best known for her work with the Smashing Pumpkins) is slated to give an in-store concert at Lush Santa Monica from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. She has a new album out called “The Coldwater Project” and has promised that all proceeds from the first track, “The Mermaid Song,” will go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to support its work on behalf of the world’s oceans and marine life. In conjunction with that effort, Lush has created a limited-edition bath bomb called the Mermaid, with proceeds earmarked for Sea Shepherd. The bath bomb will be available for purchase in the store on Saturday and online May 13. The store is at 1404 Third St., Santa Monica.
Splendid is teaming with Jen Gotch and Kelly Edmondson of Ban.do for a “tee party” from 6 to 8 p.m. May 9. Gotcha and Edmondson will help customers style their T-shirts with Ban.do accessories, Smilebooth is providing a photo booth to capture the looks and refreshments will be served by Urban Palate and Honest Tea. All Splendid tees will be buy one, get one at half price, and purchasers of $100 or more of merchandise will receive a Splendid striped clutch. Splendid is at 111 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles. Trunk Shows
Meet designer Laurel Berman of Black Halo at Neiman Marcus, Topanga, from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday. Berman will be showing Black Halo’s spring 2013 collection. The event is scheduled in the Dress Collections department on floor 2 of the store at 6550 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Canoga Park.
