Emmys 2012: Men make their mark on the red carpet

As usual, it was the women’s looks that attracted the lion’s share of the attention on the red carpet at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. But beyond the bright shades of blue and yellow, voluminous skirts and plunging decollatage seen on the women, there were some standouts – good and bad -- among the menfolk in attendance.

In our estimation, comedian Louis C.K., who took home two Emmys on Sunday night, had a winning look to match -- perfectly pulling off a black monochrome ensemble. And Jon Hamm, who usually turns out to such events splitting the difference between his scruffy off-camera look and the slicked-back look of his “Mad Men” alter ego, was practically oozing Don Draperness from every pore as he strode the red carpet (a fact that didn’t go unnoticed among the evening’s avalanche of Twitter updates). He wore a Giorgio Armani two-button midnight blue wool and cashmere peak lapel tuxedo and matching vest.

Alec Baldwin and new wife Hilaria Thomas were an eye-catching couple too. He sported a black, peak-lapel Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo paired with a long purple tie that played off the colors of her gorgeous gown.

The night’s biggest fashion faux pas? A couple of guys -- Max Greenfield of “New Girl” and Aziz Ansari of “Parks and Recreation” -- conducted red carpet interviews with sunglasses firmly in place. It’s bright, you’re famous -- we get it.

If one isn’t going to shell out the money for a pair of more-acceptable lightly tinted lenses (see: Robert Downey Jr.), may we humbly suggest you at least follow the lead of Michael J. Fox? The actor, at this point so universally beloved he could have worn a welder’s mask to the Emmys, took the time to remove his sunnies before his on-camera interview.

Our vote for the evening’s most meaningful neckwear goes to “Modern Family” actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson who accessorized his Black Fleece tuxedo with a bow tie from Tie the Knot, a charity he and partner Justin Mikita recently created to raise awareness -- and funds -- to benefit marriage equality efforts. (The debut collection, expected to retail for $25 per tie, will be available online through the Tie Bar starting in November.)
