Inauguration 2013: Copy Michelle Obama’s first lady style

Share

First Lady Michelle Obama stole the spotlight at the inaugural festivities this week as a sartorial knockout. Sporting a sleek new hairstyle, she proved with every outfit she is as much a style icon as her notably fashionable predecessors Jacqueline Kennedy and Nancy Reagan.

At the Commander in Chief ball, Obama danced the night away in a red velvet chiffon halter gown by Jason Wu, who also designed the feathery white creation she wore during her husband’s first inauguration.

For the formal swearing-in ceremony, Obama wore a navy jacquard coat by Thom Browne with a jeweled J. Crew belt, black Reed Krakoff boots and purple gloves. The look was simple yet refined, with just the right punches of color and texture.

“The fabric specifically was one I was developing for my men’s collection that I just showed -- a silk jacquard fabric based off an old tie,” Browne told Times reporter Adam Tschorn during a phone interview from Paris. “There’s a beautiful structure to the fabric.”

To get the first lady’s daytime look, try the Steffen Schraut black and blue Broadway jacquard knit coat for $405 from Stylebop.com or the Asos Jacquard Dolly coat for $110.50 from Asos.com. Cinch the waist and embellish the look with the Vince Camuto metallic snakeskin belt for $42.

The Echo Design Echo Touch center-ruched glove from Zappos.com for $38 will keep your hands warm. For a classic pair of versatile boots, try the Ros Hommerson Trumpet boot from Amazon.com for $129.97.
