Labor Day 2012: Fried chicken, pop-up pie and more specials

Labor Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the holiday than with some good food, cold drinks and friends? If you’re planning a barbecue, be sure to check out these 38 grilling and chilling recipes from the L.A. Times Test Kitchen. Feel like having someone else do the cooking? Here are some food and drink specials happening around town:

Rock and Reilly’s is hosting a white party from 11:30 a.m. till closing. The Irish rock pub will be serving $5 Patron specialty cocktails, have DJs spinning and a slew of games to play including ring toss, corn hole and darts.

Bouchon will be serving up chef Thomas Keller’s famous Ad Hoc fried chicken from 5 to 9:30 p.m. For $36 a person, get the buttermilk fried bird, New York cheddar grits, bacon and chive waffles, sauce chasseur and Vermont maple syrup.

The Larder at Tavern is offering a full Labor Day cookout menu with everything from ready-to-grill burgers and potato salad to a pastry dessert platter that serves 10. View the complete menu here. Orders need to be placed at least 48 hours in advance, (310) 806-6464.

Diep Tran is setting up a pop-up pie shop at the Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park. Stop in to snag one of Tran’s “O’Henry Peach,” “Red Heart Plum,” or “Gala-Rose Apple” pies ($25 each). To order: orders@goodgirldinette.com or 323-257-8980.

Chinois in Santa Monica will launch the ChinoisTini for the holiday ($15). The drink features Prévu sparkling liqueur, elderflower liqueur, grapefruit liqueur, lychee juice and lime.

Cãna Rum Bar will offer its signature rum and coconut water cocktail for $10. Making the drink involves a Chinese cleaver, first-aid kit, shaker, ice and a spoon. If you want to learn how to make the drink at home, bartenders will be available to demonstrate the techniques used in the recipe.
