Watermelon Oreos? They’re not black and white

Share

Watermelon is one of the quintessential fruits of summer. It’s sweet, juicy and refreshing. It’s great as an ice cream flavor, in salads, as a drink, but what about a new Oreo flavor?

Watermelon doesn’t exactly come to mind when you think of the iconic black and white cookie, but that didn’t stop Nabisco from launching a limited edition Watermelon Oreo flavor for summer. And the new flavor isn’t even the first fruit-flavored edition of the cookie sandwich. There are also banana split, coconut, chocolate berry burst, ice cream rainbow ‘shur, bert’ and strawberry milkshake varieties.

So what makes these new Oreos, watermelon Oreos?

There are no actual watermelons listed under the ingredients. Instead, you’ll find a couple food dyes, sugar, high fructose corn syrup and artificial and natural flavors.

Without any actual watermelon in the cookies, Oreo decided to color its cream red and green for the “watermelon” effect. The cookie portion of the cookie is the signature “golden” color.

“We chose Watermelon because it is a fun, summer flavor that goes great with the Golden OREO cookie,” Oreo spokesperson Kimberly Fontes told TIME.

The cookies ($4.49) hit Target snack shelves June 10 and will be available while supplies last.
