London men’s fashion week: Burberry Prorsum spring-summer 2014

The Burberry Prorsum menswear runway show, which has been on Milan’s fashion week calendar for as long as we can remember, took place in London on Tuesday, with chief creative officer Christopher Bailey showing the spring and summer 2014 collection at Kensington Gardens.

Although we would have much rather been on hand for the storied British luxury brand’s return home, we’re not going to let that stop us from sharing some of the looks from the collection -- as well as some of the details about (and Bailey’s inspiration for) the collection, which the Burberry folks sent over.

The show notes for the collection, titled “Writers and Painters,” included this description:

“A celebration of artistic and intellectual spirit, with a nod and a wink to Alan Bennett and David Hockney. Easy, relaxed tailoring sits alongside lightweight pieces in linen and slouchy cashmere, while accessories add bright pops of colour among the painterly tones. Weatherproof cagoules and sou’westers take the whole collection outdoors and into the British summer.”

A “cagoule” (and we admit, we had to look this up) is a British term that refers to a light, hooded raincoat/windbreaker -- think all-weather hoodies -- and a sou’wester (alternatively spelled southwester) is the kind of weatherproof hat you’d recognize from the Gorton’s Fisherman.

April showers bring May flowers, as the saying goes, and the foul-weather gear notwithstanding, the collection looks to be in full spring bloom, dominated by a riot of bright reds, yellows and greens, and punctuated with bold spots, stripes and a playful floral pattern.

The lighthearted vibe of the collection is heightened all the more by the show’s eye-catching accessory -- brightly colored sunglasses with lenses tinted to match the frames.

By all accounts, the spring-summer 2014 runway collection looks happy to be home -- and dressed for the weather.
