The annual Metropolitan Musem of Art Costume Institute Gala is one of the most anticipated fashion-watching events of the year.

It should be, with its mix of film stars, society mavens, pop singers, fashion’s elite creative directors, powerful editors and more. And this year’s event, scheduled May 6, is shaping up to be especially notable. Beyonce is the honorary chair, and co-chairs include actress Rooney Mara and designer Riccardo Tisci.

Now Moda Operandi, sponsor of the institute’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibition opening May 9, has announced a Spotlight program that will allow the rest of us to get in on the excitement, at least sartorially.

Moda Operandi worked with designers whose creations will be worn at the Gala -- including Nina Ricci, Anthony Vacarello, Rodarte and Delpozo, among others -- and will have some of the looks available for purchase on its website on May 7, less than 24 hours after the ball. This is the first time Moda Operandi has worked with designers ahead of time to ensure looks will be available so quickly.

Fashion lovers can watch the benefit’s red carpet arrivals via live stream beginning at 7 p.m. May 6 on ModaOperandi.com, Vogue.com, Samsung.com/GalaxyS4/Punk and Metmuseum.org.

In addition, in connection with the exhibition and starting Wednesday, Moda Operandi is offering a punk collection of more than 100 new and vintage designer items.

The Met exhibition “Punk: Chaos to Couture” is slated to be open through Aug. 14, and juxtaposes original punk garments from the 1970s with more recent couture fashions inspired by the era.

Note that Beyonce’s look in the photo here, taken during her Mrs. Carter tour, shows a smidge of latter-day punk influence in the tight jacket and tall boots combo by Pucci, but we’re betting she’ll be drop-dead glamorous at the gala.
