Mindy Kaling of ‘The Mindy Project’ talks fashion
Mindy Kaling and about half the cast of NBC’s “The Office” — where she gained fame playing Kelly Kapoor — stepped out to celebrate her new show, “The Mindy Project,” Saturday night at Skybar. Guests including Ellie Kemper, B.J. Novak, Angela Kinsey, Hilary Duff and John Mayer were spotted mingling and toasting with bright pink-and-yellow Vitaminwater cocktails.
The new series, which premieres Sept. 25 on Fox, follows the adventures of Dr. Mindy Lahiri (played by Kaling), a romcom-obsessed OB/GYN searching for love. Kaling, who serves as lead actor, executive producer and show creator, stars alongside Chris Messina (“Damages”) and Anna Kemp (“True Blood”).
Kaling chose a turquoise lace top by Equipment, a Milly leather skirt, Tracey Reese patterned sweater, a chunky Danijo necklace and strappy Jerome Rousseau heels for the party. We caught up with her to chat about her character’s style, her personal style and beauty regimen while filming.
ATR: Tell us about your character’s style on the show.
MK: We wanted it to be very different from “The Office,” so I think it’s sort of, um, hipster-nerd by way of Beyoncé. Kind of similar to tonight, like mixed patterns, colored shirts, bling and kind of conventional too. Kind of like your OB/GYN, hyper-educated hipster Indian woman.
ATR: What’s your beauty and diet regimen while filming?
MK: Last week I had a diet of, like Sour Patch Kids, and I’m working these crazy-hour days so ... at 11 at night I’ll order pizza from Domino’s. That’s terrible, I shouldn’t be admitting to that right now but that’s what it is right now.
ATR: What’s in your makeup bag?
MK: I am really digging Charlotte Ronson’s eye shadows. A friend of mine was using her bronzer because it was named after me, so I was like, ‘Oh, what are the shadows?’ They are such light, pretty colors. I just love her eye shadows. They are awesome.
ATR: Any other beauty products you can’t live without?
MK: I would also just die without my eyelash curler. I use that before I go to bed.
ATR: What are you coveting for fall?
MK: A Griffin trench coat and I’m always hoping someone will get me a Birkin. I feel like I should just put it out there. Who knows?
