Paul Shoemaker closes Savory in Malibu

Savory chef-owner Paul Shoemaker announced that he has closed his Malibu restaurant, giving up on a “long and hard battle” with its landlord, according to a release.

Shoemaker, former chef of erstwhile Bastide and chef de cuisine of Providence, opened the restaurant two years ago in Point Dume Village. It was considered a bastion in an area not necessarily known, for the most part, for the caliber of its restaurants.

Point Dume Village owner (and part owner of Savory) Zan Marquis could not be reached for comment. Marquis also has had publicized conflicts with Point Dume Village tenants Point Pizza (which will be closing in December) and the erstwhile Dume Room bar -- and with their local fans, who petitioned for their survival, according to the Malibu Times.

Shoemaker said in a statement: “We would like to thank the entire community and the city of Malibu, all of our guests that have supported us over the last two and a half years, and most of all we would like to thank our incredible and amazing staff. We are so appreciative to have had such a talented, professional and loyal group of employees working with us all of this time. This is a sad day and one of the hardest decisions I have had to make. I love Malibu and everyone here. We will never forget this amazing experience. Eat. Drink. Be Local.”
