Food Forward’s Foodsteader Tour: Handsome Coffee, Mother Moo and more

Share

There are just a handful of tickets left for Food Forward’s Foodsteader Tour, which kicks off in the spring. Angelenos not yet familiar with Food Forward should know that it’s a volunteer-powered organization that goes around the city and the surrounding Los Angeles area to harvest excess fruits and vegetables from private homes and public spaces, and then distributes donations to local food pantries.

Whether you want to sign up for individual sessions or the whole series, this year’s Foodsteader Tour features four seasonal, hands-on workshops. The tour starts with a coffee roasting and brewing class at Handsome Coffee Roasters on March 23, followed by a homemade ice cream making workshop with Karen Klemens of Mother Moo Creamery on June 1 -- an ideal set of skills for the coming summer months. On Sept. 7, Scott Diagre of Tomatomania! will lead a workshop on tomatoes, from cultivation to preservation, at his home in the hills of Ojai and on Nov 2., the tour will come full circle when cookbook authors Kevin West, home canner extraordinaire, and Joseph Shuldiner, director of the Institute of Domestic Technology, teach a class on preserving fall fruit.

The complete series, featuring four workshops, costs $400. Otherwise, individual classes range from $110 to $125. All proceeds from the Foodsteader Tour will go to Food Forward’s Harvest-For-The-Hungry programs. Purchase tickets online.
