Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony: Does a woman’s Hollywood success mean earlier divorce?

Share

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s decision to split just days ago shocked fans and music pundits alike. With similar backgrounds and levels of success, theirs seemed like a Hollywood marriage that would last.

But reports edging their way out in the aftermath have indicated that the Lopez-Anthony union was not as blissful as it may have seemed -- and that the success that the singer-actress has seen recently may have played a role in the separation.

Did J.Lo’s marriage fall victim to a variant of the “Oscar curse”?

A study by researchers from the University of Toronto and Carnegie Mellon University found that Oscar-winning women’s marriages were cut shorter than those of actresses who did not win.

An analysis of winners in the best actor and actress categories between 1936 and 2010 showed that the median duration for a best actress winner was 4.3 years. Compare that with 9.51 for non-winners. Men, on the other hand, showed virtually no ill effects from winning an Oscar (11.97 years versus 12.66 years, a statistically insignificant difference).

Even in Hollywood’s rarefied air, it seems women pay a price for their success.
