Reel Recovery Film Festival starts Friday

Share

The Studio City-based group Writers in Treatment has a great tag line: “Every story deserves a great 2nd act.” Part of this group’s second act is the annual Reel Recovery Film Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday in Los Angeles.

Writers in Treatment works to bring recovery out of the closet, and the film festival details both the horrors of addiction and the life-saving gift of recovery. This year’s films showing at the Beverly Garland Hotel Theater include “The Secret World of Recovery,” the 2011 documentary that follows novelist Leslie Glass and her screenwriter daughter Lindsey as they travel the country reporting on changes in addiction treatment.

The festival will also feature a film made at the 2010 AA World Convention in Austin, Texas, marking the organization’s 75th year. Other films include “Trainspotting” from 1996, 2004’s “Down to the Bone” and the 1956 film “On the Bowery.” Filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. will appear to discuss the making of “Bowery.”

The festival closes Sunday with “A Musical Journey Through the Steps” and a closing night “schmooze with no booze” party.
