Southern California spring garden tours for 2013

It’s time for our annual list of spring garden tours and events, for all you planners. Be sure to check organizers’ websites for more information and updates, because some events do sell out. Additions to the list and suggestions are welcome via reader comments.

April 6-7: More than 40 gardens, each planted with at least 50% California native plants, will be featured in the 10th annual self-guided tour organized by the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Members $10, nonmembers $15. Tickets purchased on or before March 20 will be mailed. After March 20, electronic receipts can be redeemed for tickets at the Theodore Payne Foundation or at selected houses on the day of the event. (818) 768-1802.

April 20: The self-guided Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase will feature 96 drought-resistant, edible and ocean-friendly landscapes. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free.

April 20-21: California Poppy Festival features food, music and crafts. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lancaster City Park, 43011 N. 10th St. West, Lancaster. $5 to $8.

April 20-21: Thousands of vegetable and ornamental plants donated by growers will be for sale in an annual fund-raiser benefiting the civic beautification organization America in Bloom Santa Paula and Santa Clara Valley Hospice Group. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 20, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21, at 287 S. Briggs Road, Santa Paula. Information: (805) 732-9677.

April 21: The Santa Monica Bay Auxiliary presents the second annual Spring Garden Event. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rain or shine. $40. (310) 582-0079.

April 21: The Los Angeles Garden Tour and Party will include stops in Brookside, Hancock Park and Windsor Square. The tour begins at Getty House, the official residence of the mayor of Los Angeles. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. $65 to $70. (213) 243-8182.

April 25-28: More than 75 vendors will attend the 24th annual Southern California Sping Garden Show at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. Free. (800) 782-8888.

April 27: The South Coast chapter of the California Native Plant Society presents its 19th annual spring garden tour of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. 9:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. $20 to $25. Reservations: (310) 629-0500.

April 28: The Garden Conservancy Open Days tour of private gardens in Pasadena runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $5 per garden. (888) 842-2442.

May 3: The self-guided Gate and Garden Tour will highlight gardens on Lombardy Lane in south Laguna Beach. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. $45 to $50; advance tickets only.

May 4: The annual self-guided Venice Garden & Home Tour will feature contemporary homes and gardens by architects such as Marc Bricault, Don Dimster, Isabelle Duvivier, John France, Michael Santa and Steven Shortridge and landscape designers such as Russ Cletta, Jay Griffith’s studio, Andre Jackson and Di Zock. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rain or shine. $60 in advance, $70 day of event.
