L.A. Wilson 20, L.A. Marshall 12
The moment Los Angeles Wilson’s football team sensed it finally had control of Friday night’s Northern League game against L.A. Marshall, it began to whoop it up on the sideline.

Wilson Coach Eddie Martinez quickly turned around and quieted his team. It was a victory but one hardly worth celebrating.

The Mules took advantage of eight Marshall turnovers while surviving their own miscues to post a 20-12 victory over the previously undefeated Barristers at Wilson.

It wouldn’t be decided until the final seconds when a pass to Marshall’s Bryant Manley fell incomplete at the Wilson 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal. The Barristers (4-1, 1-1) only got the ball when Wilson quarterback Chris Patino (14 of 34, 164 yards) was hit and fumbled with 3:10 remaining.

“We just made less mistakes than they did,” said Martinez, whose team committed five turnovers. “It was a pretty sloppy game. We hung in there, which was probably the only quality we did tonight.”

Marshall Coach Andy Moran argued vociferously for pass interference on the final incompletion.

“That one play wasn’t the game though,” Moran said. “I don’t think we could play any worse and we still had a chance at the end.”

Patino gave Wilson (4-1, 1-1) a 20-6 lead early in the fourth quarter with a six-yard touchdown run but later threw his second interception. Marshall took advantage as quarterback Marcus Hammond scored on fourth down to cut the lead to eight.

Wilson took a 14-0 lead right at halftime when Christian Tucker returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown as time ran out in the first half.

“I think it was really demoralizing for them and it gave us a big lift at halftime,” Martinez said of the play.

Marshall’s James Wilson ran for a game-high 181 yards and a touchdown.

Carson (2-3) outgained Los Alamitos (5-0) in total yardage, 296-245, but failed to covert many of its third- and fourth-down situations deep in Griffin territory. One drive that reached the 21-yard line midway through the second quarter ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down.

“When we got inside the red zone, it seemed like we couldn’t do anything,” said Carson Coach John Aguirre. “Usually we’re pretty successful down in there. We just didn’t have it today.”

Dorsey 26, Chino 10
Los Angeles Dorsey’s defense continued to wreak havoc on opponents as the Dons held host Chino to 124 yards in an intersectional victory Thursday night.

For the Dons (5-0), who have held opponents to an average of six points a game, the victory was another step in gaining respect for the program and City Section teams.

“Our kids took it as a challenge,” Dorsey Coach Paul Knox said. “Many people think City football [teams] can’t compete with Southern Section teams. Our kids took a cue from Venice beating Loyola.”

Jeremiah Johnson set the stage on the first play from scrimmage, bouncing outside and taking the ball 80 yards for a touchdown 13 seconds into the game. He added a 31-yard scoring run that gave Dorsey a 26-10 lead with 2:33 left in the third quarter.
