Hart 64, Rosary 54
Ashlee Trebilcock was standing at the free-throw line when Hart High girls’ basketball coach Dave Munroe asked his standout point guard if she wanted to take a timeout before she took her shots or after.

She decided to wait, and the Indians benefited soon thereafter when Rosary took a timeout instead.

The exchange was just a small reflection of the role Trebilcock plays on the team. The 18 points and eight rebounds she registered in Hart’s 64-54 victory in the title game of the Marina/Edison Tournament at Marina High was a larger indication of the responsibility and control the junior is freely given in every game the Indians play.

“She has a lot of input,” Munroe said. “She really is like a coach out there and I didn’t want to mess up her rythym.”

Trebilcock converted the Indians’ last field goal and othwerwise orchestrated Hart’s offense expertly down the stretch as the Indians won the tournament for the first time in four appearances.

Ashlee Trebilcock had 18 points and Taylor Lilley added 14 points for No. 10 Hart (11-1). Jen Rogers had 17 points and Christina Lopez added 16 points for No. 16 Mater Dei. The Monarchs led, 38-34, with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, but five different players scored for Hart in an 11-1 run that gave the Indians the lead for good.

Rosary 53, San Clemente 52
The 12th ranked Royals (11-2) made seven three-point baskets, including four in the final 8:17 to upset third-ranked San Clemente (8-2). Teresa Karcher, who scored 20 and made four three-pointers, made three during Rosary’s late run, including back-to-back three-pointers after the score was tied, 42-42. But it was a three-pointer by Desiree Ekno with 1:56 remaining that gave Rosary a decisive 53-50 lead.

Rosary’s torrid outside shooting offset the San Clemente’s inside game that included Lindsey Pluimer, who scored 24, and Lauren Riley, who scored 15. But Rosary’s pesky defense did a good job of denying Pluimer and Riley the ball, occasionally surrounding Pluimer with four defenders. Pluimer had a chance to win the game for San Clemente in the final seconds, but missed two shot attempts under the basket. She was fouled on the second, then missed both free-throws with 5.6 seconds remaininig.

“She’s beating herself up,” said San Clemente Coach Mary Mulligan, “but she kept us in the game.”

It looked like Rosary would run out the clock, but a long pass sailed out of bounds, giving San Clemente another opportunity, but there was nothing available inside, and Lauren Redfield’s three-point attempt from the corner was errant. It’s Rosary’s first-ever victory over the highest-ranked team in Orange County.

Rosary, which committed only six turnovers in the first three quarters, had 12 of its final 14 points come via three-point shots.
