Luxury awaits at check-in

Share

It won’t be fully open for months, but the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi resort in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is already getting rapturous reviews. The “grand deluxe” villas with plunge pool (about $1,000 a night) are “some of the most lavish resort accommodations we have ever encountered,” Andrew Harper wrote last month in his well-regarded Hideaway Report, a newsletter for high-end travelers.

Introductory rates for more modest units start at $295 through Sept. 30; regular rates begin at $495.

As of last week, about 50 of the 144 suites and villas, decorated with Asian artifacts and Persian silk rugs, were open. The spa is expected to open by the end of this month and the rest of the resort by November. Information: 011-66-53-888-888, vwww.mandarinoriental.com.

Laguna spa gets 5 stars

Spa MONTAGE at the Montage Resort & Spa in Laguna Beach this year became the first spa to be awarded five stars, Mobil Travel Guide’s top rating.

Mobil, which has rated hotels and restaurants for decades but began rating spas only last year, awarded four stars to eight more spas in California, bringing the state’s total to 12, the most in the U.S. (Mobil does not rate day spas or destination spas.)

Shane O’Flaherty, Mobil’s vice president of quality assurance, said the personalized service at Montage put it over the top. Mobil inspected more than 125 hotel spas. For a full list, visit vwww.mobiltravelguide.com.

A hideaway fit for a King

There will also be a concert of Elvis tribute artists and others at 2 p.m. May 8 at the Palm Springs Desert Museum’s Annenberg Theater ($25 to $35) and, new this year, a poolside concert at 4 p.m. May 7 at the house ($35, including the tour).
