A thoroughly modern Maya

During a three-week tour of Guatemala and Costa Rica in February, Bardene Allen of Dana Point took a day cruise on Lake Atitlán, in the highlands of Guatemala.

That's where she spotted this woman selling necklaces and photographed her with a new digital Canon PowerShot S1 IS.

Her hat is a traditional Guatemalan design: A band of fabric is wrapped around and around to create a brim. Her teeth are inlaid with stars, another custom.

But she has a decidedly modern side too. "I loved the fact that she was talking on her cellphone," Allen said.
