A 2-year-old boy was killed Friday when a 6-foot metal dolphin statue fell on him while his family was walking along a busy street at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.
The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. in 220 block of Jefferson Street, said Gordon Shyy, a spokesman for San Francisco police.
The boy's family was visiting from Utah, police said.
Initially, it appeared the boy did not suffer serious injury, but his condition soon worsened and he died at a hospital, Shyy said.
The business, which was not identified, was ticketed by police for having property outside the designated area on the sidewalk, which is mandated by the port authority, Shyy said.
"They were warned last year about this same infraction with the same dolphin statue," Shyy said.
The boy was not jumping on the statue, but may have stepped on the base to get a better look at it, Shyy said.
