Brush fires erupt in Angeles National Forest, Malibu
Firefighters were responding to a brush fire in Angeles National Forest on Thursday.
The blaze, which has been dubbed the Shoemaker fire, had burned about 60 acres near the San Gabriel River Ranger District roughly 45 minutes after it was first reported about 1 p.m., officials said.
The fire is running uphill and scorching heavy brush in the 2400 block of East Fork Road, near Glendora Mountain Road, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Rick Flores said.
The Fire Department dispatched a helicopter to the scene to assist U.S. Forest Service firefighters.
A second smaller brush fire was reported this afternoon in Malibu, at 31740 Mulholland Hwy.
Like much of the forest, the area is tinder-dry, said Forest Service spokesman Ron Ashdale.
Dry conditions made the risk for fire on Thursday “very high,” according to the Forest Service.
