Two people were killed after a recreational vehicle slammed into a light pole in Canoga Park on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The vehicle was heading north in the 8400 block of DeSoto Avenue when it hit a fire hydrant, then struck a light pole and fence overlooking the Browns Canyon Wash, according to Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

Two people were found dead in the vehicle, though the cause of the accident or their deaths was not immediately known, Humphrey said.

The vehicle was teetering over the edge of the wash, which was dry, but firefighters were able to secure it and keep it from falling in, Humphrey said.

Firefighters had to shut down the northbound lanes of DeSoto Avenue as firefighters responded to the accident.

A short video posted to an official LAFD Twitter account showed firefighters working to gain entry to the wrecked vehicle, which had run up onto the sidewalk, as the damaged hydrant spewed water into the air.
