A hit-and-run motorist heading eastbound on the 10 Freeway in South El Monte collided with another vehicle early Saturday, causing it to smash into a parked California Highway Patrol car, which erupted in flames, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 2 a.m. on the freeway just east of Peck Road, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

Two CHP officers had stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway to talk to another driver in a separate matter, he said.

At some point, a minivan and a dark Mitsubishi Eclipse were involved in a collision, causing the minivan to hit the patrol car before it overturned, Polizzi said. Neither of the CHP officers were hurt.

The driver of the minivan suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital, he said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi fled the scene and remains at large, Polizzi said.
