El Camino Real clinches California Academic Decathlon title
El Camino Real Charter High School won the 35th Annual California Academic Decathlon this weekend in Sacramento, officials announced Sunday.
The team dominated the three-day competition held at Memorial Auditorium, clinching first place finishes in the “Super Quiz” portion and overall competition. El Camino scored 57,747.3 out of a possible 65,400 points.
El Camino last won the state and national competition in 2010. The school is in Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley.
The nine-member team is: students Justin Chau, Neelem Sheikh, Thasneem Syed, Melissa Cheng, Sandra Vadhin, Eric Yun, Jose Apolaya, Rohan Boone and Brandon Slater. Stephanie Franklin is the team’s coach.
El Camino beat out 64 other teams for the coveted title, including this year’s Los Angeles Unified School District winner, John Marshall High, and Granada Hills Charter High, the 2011-13 state and national champion. The competing high schools tested their wits on World War I, covering 10 subjects such as math, art, science, economics and literature.
Granada Hills finished 533.2 points behind El Camino. Both teams will represent the state at the national academic competition set for April in Honolulu.
