Dozens of kite boarders, windsurfers rescued in San Francisco Bay
More than two dozen kite boarders and windsurfers were rescued in San Francisco Bay after low winds left them stranded in the path of large commercial ships.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 25 wind surfers and kite boarders just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday near Crissy Field in the San Francisco Bay, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Sean Kelly.
Wind gusts had suddenly dropped and hampered the windsurfers and kite boarders ability to get back to shore, he said.
The boarders were stuck in an area that serves as a gateway to busy commercial ports and is used by large ships, according to a Coast Guard statement.
The number of kite boarders and windsurfers rescued established a record for the San Francisco Coast Guard, he said.
None of the rescued kite boarders and windsurfers was injured and most were wearing wetsuits, Kelly added.
