LAPD officer charged with attempted murder of estranged wife

A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with the attempted murder of his estranged wife during an off-duty incident of domestic violence, prosecutors confirmed Thursday.

Jose Robert Figueroa, 29, was charged with three felony counts of attempted murder, injuring a spouse and making criminal threats, according to a complaint filed this week by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

The complaint alleges Figueroa committed the crimes Sunday “under circumstances involving domestic violence.”

Online jail records show Figueroa was arrested by Inglewood police at 1:45 a.m. Monday and booked about 45 minutes later. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon in lieu of $2.5-million bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said an internal investigation into Figueroa began immediately after he was arrested. Figueroa has been removed from the field and assigned to home, Smith said.

Figueroa was assigned to the LAPD’s Newton division, Smith said. Department records showed he had been with the LAPD since June 2007.

Figueroa’s estranged wife told KTLA-TV that Figueroa tried to strangle her. She said the couple had been married for seven years but are going through a divorce. They also have a 6-year-old son, she told the television station.
