An argument between two people in Carson early Wednesday morning led to a confrontation with police, a foot chase and eventually a shooting that left the suspect dead, police said.

It all began about 3:15 a.m. when a woman flagged down Long Beach police and said her boyfriend had threatened her and her family, CBS-Los Angeles reported.

Police found the man at a gas station at East Del Amo Boulevard and South Central Avenue.

“They’d dealt with this guy before,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Shawn McCarthy.

When police confronted the man, he pulled out a gun and opened fire, KABC-TV reported.

No one was hit and the man ran north past the gas station through a park, where more gunfire was exchanged, before he ran into a residential neighborhood.

Police fatally shot the man in the 20000 block of Hillford Avenue in Carson, authorities said. His identity was not immediately available. There were no reports of injuries among police.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies assisted in containing the crime scene, but Long Beach police will handle the investigation because the incident began in their jurisdiction, McCarthy said.

[For the record, 10:20 a.m., Sept. 25: An earlier verson of this post incorrectly referred to the locations of the incidents as being in Long Beach, when in fact they were in Carson. Long Beach police, however, was the agency involved.]
