Ex-Marine charged with hate crime in beating outside gay bar
An ex-Marine accused of committing a hate crime outside a gay bar in Long Beach will be extradited from Illinois to face prosecution in L.A. County, officials aid.
John Kelly O’Leary, 21, was arrested Monday night in the Chicago suburb of Evergreen Park, police said.
O’Leary allegedly beat two men outside the Silver Fox Bar near 4th Street and Redondo Avenue in September while yelling anti-gay slurs, police said.
L.A. County prosecutors tacked on a hate-crime charge in their complaint. O’Leary faces felony counts of battery causing great bodily injury and assault likely to produce great bodily injury related to the Sept. 3 incident.
The Times reported in September the attack took place shortly before the bar closed. Prosecutors said O’Leary got into a confrontation with a man before it turned physical.
He’s accused of fracturing one man’s hip and giving him a concussion. Another man was allegedly choked.
O’Leary was at the bar with three other Marines. Those three were not charged. He was being held in lieu of $105,000 bail.
