Navy commander relieved of duty due to “inappropriate” emails
A Navy commander has been relieved of duty for sending “inappropriate” emails and text messages to female enlisted sailors, Navy officials said Thursday.
Allen Maestas was relieved as executive officer of a beachmaster unit. The decision was made by Capt. Kevin Flanagan, commander of Naval Beach Group 1 in Coronado.
Beachmaster units are assigned to transport combat Marines and equipment to the shore in landing-craft-air cushion craft and other means.
Maestas has been temporarily assigned to the staff of Naval Beach Group 1. The operations officer has assumed the duties of acting executive officer until a permanent replacement arrives in June, officials said.
The nature of the emails and text messages was not disclosed.
Maestas served in the enlisted ranks before graduating from the University of Utah and being commissioned in 1995. He has served several ship-board deployments and also a year in Afghanistan to assist in training the Afghan army.
His decorations include a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and five Navy Commendation Medals.
