7th newborn this year turned over under Safe Surrender program
A baby girl was turned over at a hospital in Lancaster this week under the county’s Safe Surrender program.
The newborn was seventh this year to be given up under the program, according to Los Angeles County officials.
“Last week, we launched a new Safe Surrender outreach campaign with a message to desperate mothers that ‘there is a better choice,’” said County Supervisor Don Knabe.
“This mother made the better choice by safely surrendering her baby at a hospital, and now her child has a chance to be part of a loving family.”
The program, according to Knabe, lets someone surrender an infant that shows no signs of abuse and is no more than 3 days old.
The newborn girl is in protective custody and will be placed with a family by the Department of Children and Family Services.
This latest turnover also marks the 110th baby given up to the program since it began more than a dozen years ago.
