Woman’s body found in Newport Beach, investigation is underway
Newport Beach police Monday afternoon were investigating the death of a woman whose body was found under a bridge in Newport Bay.
Officers responded Monday morning to a report of a woman lying face down by the bridge at East Coast Highway and Bayside Drive, the Newport Beach Police Department said.
Officers determined that the woman was dead, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said in a statement.
On Monday afternoon, divers from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department were preparing to enter the water to search for evidence, according to television news reports.
Terese Pearson, owner of the nearby fish market Pearson’s Port, said a couple walking their dog found the body.
When Pearson arrived at her business about 8:15 a.m., she didn’t notice anything suspicious, she told the Daily Pilot. She later saw police cars and officers in the area.
“I poked my head out to see if they had guns drawn,” Pearson said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
The Orange County coroner’s office will be conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death.
The Police Department is also investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Ryan Peters at (949) 644-3779.
