Father and 1-year-old son shot to death inside Oakland home
A father and his 1-year-old son were shot to death inside an Oakland residence Wednesday morning, the second time a child has been gunned down inside a home there in less than a month.
Police said the shooting occurred about 2:45 a.m. in East Oakland’s Brookfield Village neighborhood. At least one person – police believe there may be multiple gunmen – fired into the rear of a home, hitting at least two people.
The Oakland Tribune identified the victims as 20-year-old Andrew Thomas of Fresno and his 1-year-old son Drew Jackson. The victims were identified by people who identified themselves as relatives, the paper said. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene and Drew died at the hospital.
Police are investigating if someone inside the home was targeted and are wary that there could be retaliation, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
“We were all asleep, and the gunshots went off and woke us up,” Konya Baylis, who identified herself as Andrew Thomas’ aunt and Drew Jackson’s great aunt, told the Tribune. “I ran out of my room and my sister had [Drew] in her arms. I ran across the house and grabbed my other nephew in my arms. He was OK. It’s kind of a blur. It was just really awful.”
Local media reported the street where the shooting occurred is sealed off with police tape. Multiple children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. They have since been relocated by a relative, the Tribune reported.
“Any time a young child is killed, we’re all saddened by this,” Oakland police Sgt. Dom Arotzarena told the Chronicle. “We’re obviously sad for the loss of human life, but when it’s a baby, I mean, come on. It’s unconscionable.”
Just last month, An 8-year-old girl was killed and two other children wounded when someone outside the apartment where they were having a sleepover sprayed it with gunfire.
The Oakland Tribune and other Bay Area media identified the slain child as Alaysha Carradine, who was sleeping over at the home of her 7-year-old friend. That child, her 4-year-old brother and their 64-year-old grandmother survived.
