Polls open and balloting begins for federal, state and local offices
Polls open at 7 a.m. for voters to cast ballots in the primary election to select candidates for California governor, secretary of state, attorney general and a number of other state and local offices.
Two statewide ballot measures are also on the ballot. Proposition 41 would provide $600 million in bond financing to build affordable housing for homeless veterans and Proposition 42 makes public access to government records and notice of meetings a constitutional right.
Voters also will pick candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, the California Legislature, two open seats on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles County sheriff and assessor, and local districts and city contests.
Due to the state’s Top Two Open Primary Act, the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, will face each other in a November runoff.
Voters can cast ballots or drop off vote-by-mail ballots at their polling location, marked on the back of the sample ballot booklet or through an online locator at https:/www.lavote.net/Locator/.
