Rim fire near Yosemite continues to rage, jumps in size
A wildfire raging in a rugged area near Yosemite National Park continued to grow overnight, jumping in size from about 10,000 acres to more than 16,000 acres.
“It’s still an active, growing fire,” incident command spokesman Dennis Godfrey said Wednesday. “We’re putting a lot of resources into it.”
The fire was listed as 0% contained Wednesday morning, but Godfrey said there could be an update later in the day.
The Rim fire, which cut off traffic heading west out of Yosemite along California 120 starting Monday night, has since destroyed at least two homes and threatened 2,500 more in the tiny vacation communities of Groveland and Buck Meadows.
Communities along Ferretti Road, which branches off from California 120, were evacuated. The highway was also closed at Ferretti.
Godfrey said more than 700 firefighters were struggling with the blaze as it burns along steep ridges and hillsides in the Stanislaus National Forest.
