Two Mexican nationals died after being found “unconscious and not breathing” Tuesday in the trunk of a car attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico, the Border Patrol said.

The two men -- a 28-year-old and a 20-year-old -- were declared dead after being rushed to local hospitals. Officials referred to the deaths as linked to a “smuggling incident.”

The two were discovered in the trunk of a 2012 Dodge Challenger about 2:30 p.m. at the San Ysidro border crossing.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, after suspecting something was amiss with the car, had ordered it to pass through an imaging system. The system spotted an “anomaly” in the trunk. An agent then opened the trunk and found the two.

A Customs and Border Protection agent trained in CPR tried to revive the two but was unsuccessful. The 41-year-old driver was taken into custody for possible criminal charges.
