Runaway Thousand Oaks teens found safe, authorities say

Two teenagers thought to have run away from their homes in Thousand Oaks and described as possibly suicidal have been found “in good health,” authorities said Friday.

Kaylee Rebert, 14, and Nicholas Marino, 13, were found in Newbury Park about 3 p.m. Friday after someone reported seeing the pair, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said. Deputies found them a short time later.

The teens were not in any danger when they were found, the department said, adding that at this time there was “no crime associated with this incident.” An investigation is ongoing.

The search began when Ventura County sheriff’s deputies received a call about 1 a.m. Thursday reporting Nicholas as missing. Deputies searched for him at his girlfriend’s house, and Kaylee was then also reported missing.

Authorities believed the teenagers were runaways because they left notes for their parents.

The search initially led authorities to the 2,000-area Wildwood Park, which was searched with helicopters and dogs. Kaylee knew the park well and had visited it Wednesday, sheriff’s Capt. Dave Wareham said. Tracking dogs had initially led investigators to the park as well, sheriff’s Sgt. Barbara Payton said.

But Wareham said late Thursday that deputies had turned their attention away from the park and had cast their net wider.
