Arizona State opens recruiting office in Santa Monica
California’s state universities are on the prowl for more out-of-state students for the extra tuition they pay. Now Arizona State University is turning the tables on the Golden State.
ASU this week opened a new recruiting, alumni and research center in Santa Monica. The location, in a mid-rise office building, has a fortuitous address: 725 N. Arizona Ave.
The eight-person staff will be looking for new freshmen and transfer students, organizing alumni gatherings here, arranging internships and helping with technology transfer and venture financing for bringing Arizona State inventions to market, officials said.
“It’s very important for ASU,” Jim O’Brien, the university’s vice president and chief of staff, said Friday. “There are important connections not just between ASU and California, but between Arizona and California.”
ASU, which has its main campus in Tempe and several satellite campuses elsewhere, previously had student recruiters in California operating out of their homes. About 5,200 of the school’s 60,000 undergraduates are from California, O’Brien said.
Tuition and fees for out-of-staters is $22,975, compared with $9,722 for Arizona residents, according to the university’s website. However, some of its programs offer steep discounts to Californians through the Western Undergraduate Exchange program.
