Amtrak train fatally strikes woman who walked onto tracks
A woman who was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Anaheim early Wednesday had apparently waited for another train to pass before she fatefully stepped onto the tracks, authorities said.
The woman, who has not been identified, stopped at a pedestrian walkway at La Palma Avenue after the warning arms went down, and she watched a southbound Amtrak train go by, said Anaheim Lt. Tim Schmidt.
After it went by, she stepped onto the tracks, apparently unaware of an approaching northbound train, authorities said.
“At the last minute she tries to get out of the way, but it’s too late,” Schmidt said.
The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 565 train that struck the woman originated from San Diego and was headed to Union Station in Los Angeles. No one inside the train was injured, said Vernae Graham, spokeswoman for Amtrak.
The train was delayed for about an hour and 45 minutes. Two other Amtrak trains were canceled; their passengers were moved to other trains but experienced delays of about 40 minutes, officials said.
The 9:15 a.m. fatal collision also delayed a Los Angeles-bound Metrolink train by 90 minutes, said Jeff Lustgarten, spokesman for the agency. Another Metrolink train was canceled, with its passengers instead taking either an Amtrak train or a bus.
