After New York tornado, Northeast braces for winds, storms
Residents of the Northeast braced for even more severe weather Saturday after a tornado hit a beachfront neighborhood in New York City.
The tornado, which began over the New York Harbor, struck Saturday about 11:00 a.m. near a surf club, according to the National Weather Service. Video taken by a bystander and posted on YouTube showed the tornado hurling debris as it made its way over land.
Tornadoes in New York City are rare but not unheard of. One hit the Bronx in 2010 and another hit the city four years earlier.
Forecasters, meanwhile, said that parts New England, central New York and northern parts of the Mid-Atlantic region should prepare for severe thunderstorms, widespread damaging winds and the possibility of more tornadoes through Saturday evening.
A tornado watch was in effect until 9 p.m. for parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, according to the National Weather Service.
The Hartford Courant reported that about 1,800 people were without power in Connecticut because of storms. Some minor flooding was also reported.
The rain and winds also delayed the U.S. Open. The women’s final between Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams was moved to Sunday as was the men’s semifinal between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer.
On a positive note, the severe weather was not set to last long.
“This front is moving so quickly that it’ll be offshore basically by tonight,” Greg Carbin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Los Angeles Times. “It’ll be a done deal and there will be beautiful weather moving in tomorrow.”
