At least 11 hurt in drive-by shooting in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON -- A drive-by shooting early Monday morning in Washington, D.C., injured at least 11 people.
None of the victims’ injuries are life-threatening, a Washington Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman said Monday. The department is investigating whether a 12th person was hurt when two cars sped by a street corner in an up-and-coming part of the city, opening fire on a crowd gathered outside a building.
Police have not yet released any information on the shooters’ potential motives.
The shooting occurred at 2:10 a.m. in the area of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street in northwest Washington, according to police. The make and model of the two cars have not yet been identified, nor have police determined whether shooters were in one or both vehicles, the spokeswoman said.
Surveillance video footage of the incident has been released in an attempt to identify suspects.
Violent crime in the nation’s capital has decreased in recent years. In 2012, the city recorded fewer than 100 homicides -- the lowest number since 1963. In the early 1990s, the number was in the 400s. Thirteen homicides have been reported in the District of Columbia for 2013.
