Officials say a 7-year-old California girl died after her mother lost control of her car and the vehicle plunged into the Russian River.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the California Highway Patrol said the girl’s mother, Luz Ramirez-Marquez, was driving on Highway 101 in Mendocino County when she crashed Sunday afternoon.

CHP Officer Marian Pohl said witnesses saw the car veer off the road and plummet about 300 feet into a ravine.

Hopland Fire Department Assistant Chief Mitch Franklin said passers-by were performing CPR on the girl when firefighters arrived. Firefighters took over but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Franklin says it took nearly an hour to cut Ramirez-Marquez out of the car. She was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
