Nicole Richie was sentenced to four days in jail and placed on three years’ probation this morning in connection with her arrest in December for driving under the influence of drugs.

As part of a deal with prosecutors, the actress, who stars with heiress Paris Hilton on the television show “The Simple Life,” admitted to driving under the influence of drugs and a previous DUI conviction.

Richie has until Sept. 28 to serve her jail time and must pay a $2,048 fine, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. She was given six hours credit on her jail time.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner Steve Lubell warned the celebrity that she would “go to County Jail” if she violated the terms of her probation.

Lubell said the penalty he gave Riche was “standard” for the offense.

Richie, who wore a black dress and dark sunglasses, entered and left the Glendale courthouse without commenting to a throng of reporters gathered at the entrance.

Richie was arrested in December for driving the wrong way on the 134 Freeway in Burbank.

California Highway Patrol officers said they found Richie stopped in the carpool lane and that she was the lone occupant of the vehicle. She admitted to officers that she had smoked marijuana and taken the painkiller Vicodin, police said.

In 2003, Richie was arrested on suspicion of heroin possession and spent time in rehabilitation.
