Roasting Rights

Share
Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

Despite what some readers, talk-radio hosts and White House correspondents think, the bumper-sticker wisdom is right: Dissent is patriotic.

At least that’s what cartoonists believe. So while the rest of America is celebrating our fragile and historic experiment in liberty by downing liquefied hops and exploding micro-munitions, many of us will be at our drawing boards, biting the hand that freed us.

Whether torturing ourselves over the plight of Iraqi prisoners, clucking about China’s human rights or panning the Patriot Act, we toast freedom by constantly exercising our right to roast it.

Judging from the work of my peers, the 1st Amendment seems to be alive and well. Maybe I’ll take tomorrow off after all, invite some cartoonists over and throw a few flags on the grill.
